Real Life Photoshop

March 12, 2008 – 11:56 am

Wouldn’t it be great if you could go back and revisit the special moments of your life?

And, wouldn’t it be even better if you could actually change those moments?

We think they’re on to something here in this Diet Coke ad:

Maybe we could go back and alter the photos of us wearing Parachute Pants in the 80’s…

Hey AT&T, Stop It!

March 3, 2008 – 2:19 pm

Oh, sure, AT&T is a fine wireless company. And, they’ve had tons of success being the exclusive provider of the iPhone. And, I’ve been a loyal customer for years and years and years. (That is, if you count PacBell becoming Cingular and then becoming AT&T. Oh, and does anyone remember when AT&T was broken up because of anti-trust monopoly issues. Funny, huh?)

Anyway, as it happens, AT&T just recently divested themselves of a cell tower near where I live (they sold it to T-Mobile) and now I have virtually no coverage at home. So, when I see all these ads in their current campaign where EVERYTHING (the palm trees, the skyscrapers, the beer kegs, etc.) are meant to enforce the perception that customers get 5-bars of reception everywhere they live it just drives me crazy.

(Click Here to see the new AT&T spots.)

“More bars in more places?” Well, I think me and my 1-2 bars are going to be switching to TMobile soon. Anyone want to be in my “Fav-5?”

“Hey, it’s Groundhog Day!” “Hey, it’s Groundhog Day!”

February 2, 2008 – 10:30 am

Yep, we hope you got all of your shopping done before today! (We hear this holiday is big in Pennsylvania…)

In honor of that great movie “Groundhog Day” we offer up a few ads that somehow seem to use the same idea. (They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, right?)

“Our cars carry Royalty.” “Our cars carry Royalty.”

Here’s to the evolution of the jingle

January 10, 2008 – 9:46 pm

There is a very loud band playing right now in the studio across from our office. The walls are shaking and so is my brain. Some celebrity from “American Pie” is in the band, but it doesn’t make my head feel any better.

But the one good side effect is that is made me start thinking about music and drove me to ZADZADZ “It’s the Music” channel where we showcase commercials with good use of music.

One of my favorites, to drown out the band across the alley, is the Jay-Z Budweiser commercial.

To sum it up as eloquently as I can with this much background noise, the music in these commercials really take the concept of the “jingle” to a whole new level.

Bill from RetroCommercials has a much more eloquent take on “jingles” here.

“I can’t believe how much this makes me like Jaguar”

January 3, 2008 – 5:33 pm

“I can’t believe how much this makes me like Jaguar”

Those words were spoken by a friend as he passed on the link to this new Jaguar ad:

http://www.zadzadz.com/Jaguar-XK-Heart-commercial

It really is a great commercial and doesn’t even come close to affirming my previous perception of the company and its cars. (If I could afford one) would I buy a Jaguar after seeing this commercial? I think so.

Now, I want to throw it out there to y’all to see if you can remember some other examples of TV commercials redefining a brand.

Can I get away with buying my wife a Wii for Christmas?

December 20, 2007 – 8:34 pm

That is the burning question. She actually likes it. She played it before I even got my hands on one. Our 5 year old daughter played golf with me on it. That’s what it’s about, right? “We would like to play…”

I know it is self-serving. And I need a Wii in the house like I need a hole in the head. But after watching all these Wii commercials, I’m being slowly but surely prodded in the right direction.

Watch the Wii Commercials here

Really, I think she’ll like it.

Apple “Get a Mac” Commercials

December 3, 2007 – 11:38 pm

They’re probably among the most well-known and most talked about television ads out there these days. They’re rolled out with such perfect timing that the moment we get sick of an ad, we’re hit with a new one. They’ve become mini-sitcom-series in themselves - rivaling the Taster’s Choice couple of the 1990s. Some people have called them mean spirited. Mad Magazine ranks them #1 in their list of the dumbest of things about advertising. But overall, people like them enough to warrant a wikipedia listing big enough to make me blush.

But for me, I just get a kick out of seeing Brandon from ‘Galaxy Quest’ getting the last word. (For other Brandon fans, Justin Long did do a little bit of a reprise of the role in ‘Live Free or Die Hard’)

Okay, ‘nuf said. It’s about the commercials, right? That’s why we’re here. There are lots of places to see these ads all over the internet. But we have a nice collection of some off the latest Get a Mac Commercials right here on ZADZADZ in a nice friendly, take-it-home-to-meet-your-mother Flash video viewer.

(as a long time PC fan recently horrified by Vista’s security setup - this one really nails it)

Holiday Gift Ideas

December 3, 2007 – 10:52 pm

It’s been a little quiet on the ZADZADZ blogging front. But that’s only because we’ve been too busy adding new user features to the site. The new features are rolling out later this week but we do have something we can show you right now:

A bunch of commercials with holiday gift ideas.

There’s not much more to say about this channel, other than…

We want all of them!

American Express Series

November 25, 2007 – 11:12 pm

American Express has used celebrities to sell their products ever since Karl Malden warned us of the dangers of travelling without their traveller’s checks. (It certainly worked on me. They were the only brand of traveller’s checks I ever bought. In fact, I’m not sure I even knew that anyone else made traveller’s checks. But then again, that’s not saying much for my credibility to comment on this, is it)?

The Amex ads have taken a nice twist of late. No longer are we starry-eyed spectators wondering who the too-cool-to-be-you-and-me people in the commercials are - “Do you know me?” - now we’re catching “glimpses” into their lives. With the “My Life. My Card” series, American Express seems to be agreeing with Us Magazine in saying - “celebrities, they’re just like us.” In these latest commercials, we get to see a little behind the scenes action touched with a sprinkle of humor.

Check out the commercial featuring Tina Fey which has been getting tons of airplay everywhere we look.

And watch this latest commercial with John McEnroe who seems to be making a bit of a comeback with his television appearances lately.
